Francie, the number is the magnitude, I don't think anyone uses the actual "richter" scale anymore but the new scale is alsmost exactly the same and everyone still calls them richter numbers. The size of the circle indicates the magnatude, the colour indicates the depth. We are still getting alot of aftershocks (three in the past two hours, the strongest 4.2 at 20km deep), and the depth is a big part of how strong they feel.

what does it mean on the animation, Depth? And are the measurements, e.g. 3.4M, the strength of the quakes in Richter scale? 651 is a bloody lot!
